Perth to Geraldton (415km)

Start your journey early today to allow ample time to explore the coastal towns dotted along the Indian Ocean Drive as you make your way to Geraldton for the night. Just an hour and half, you will reach the town of Lancelin, and a further 50 minutes drive north, is the fishing village of Cervantes. You will pass pristine beaches and in spring, the most amazing wildflower show. The last stretch of the Indian Ocean Drive takes you to the windsurfing capital of Geraldton, a buzzing modern foreshore that offers shopping, dining and lively entertainment.

Geraldton to Carnarvon (478km)

Make an early start as you head to the tropical food bowl of Carnarvon today, the largest and one of the most accessible fringing reefs on Earth. Take your tastebuds on a culinary journey as you sample fresh local produce from seafood to fruit and vegetables, directly from plantations and farms, or at weekly markets (depending on the time of year). You will also find jams, preserves and sauces made from local produce that you can take home with you. Or, pack a picnic lunch and venture down to the foreshore to Carnarvon Fascine, or inland to Rocky Pool, an iconic Australian waterhole, to sit back and enjoy your feast.

Carnarvon to Exmouth (364km)

Head north to Exmouth today, located at the northern tip of the Ningaloo Reef, another great place where you can swim with the whale sharks. You will find the clearest turquoise waters and the world’s largest fringing reefs at the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, a paradise for dolphins, manta rays, turtles, humpback whales and of course the whale shark. Or venture out to Cape Range National Park, with its breathtaking canyons, limestone ranges, unspoilt coastline and the red canyon of Yardie Creek.

Exmouth to Coral Bay (153km)

Your journey today will take you to the seaside town of Coral Bay, the only place that provides direct access to Ningaloo Reef. You can snorkel directly from the beach, with safe swimming and snorkelling spots available year round. Depending on the time of year you visit, you can watch or even swim with the gentle whale sharks – the largest fish in the ocean, humpback whales, graceful manta rays, or see the turtles nesting.

Take a leisurely drive as you make your way to the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, stopping along the way. Witness the largest and oldest living stromatolites fossils on the planet at Hamelin Pool Stromatolites; view the dramatic coastline made up of billions of tiny shells at Shell Beach; and for spectacular ocean views, stop off at Eagle Bluff. You will pass the town of Denham as you reach Monkey Mia, one of the world’s top spots to see bottlenose dolphins in the wild. The dolphins visit the shoreline daily, mainly in the mornings, to delight visitors with their intelligence, playfulness and grace. Head down to the Dolphin Centre to learn more about these beautiful creatures, or join a wildlife cruise or kayak tour to spot wild dolphins and see the world’s largest population of dugongs.

Today make your way to the coastal outback playground of Kalbarri.
