Day 1 – 4 Hobart
Tasmania’s welcoming capital, Hobart, provides a diverse range of activities and adventures to experience. It is the perfect hub from which to explore the surrounding lush and abounding wilderness. The stunning sandstone architecture is a reminder of the capital’s colonial past. Spend time exploring the city of Hobart, offering some of the finest sandstone buildings remaining in Australia, the historic waterfront lining Salamanca Place, with its artist studios & galleries that fill the sandstone warehouses, and Battery Point with its cottages and grand stone homes and their well-manicured gardens, making this the best preserved colonial era suburb in Australia. For spectacular views of the city and harbour, drive up to the summit of Mt Wellington, or take a walk along Hobart’s iconic waterfront and visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, or the Maritime Museum of Tasmania, or why not add on a Iron Pot Cruise, taking you along the maritime waterways of Hobart, stopping at Australia’s oldest lighthouse and circumnavigating Betsey Island.
A must do is to plan your trip to be in Hobart on a Saturday to visit the award-winning Salamanca Markets offering artisan produce and local crafts, or feast on local produce at the Farmers Markets, every Sunday.
Take a short drive to Coal Valley, renowned for their cool-climate wineries and farm-to-gate produce, and to the heritage town of Richmond, famous for the Richmond Bridge and elegant Georgian architecture, where you can stop and get a glimpse of what life was like in 1820 at the Hobart Town Historical Model Village. See the Tasmanian Devil and other local wildlife at either the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, located a short drive from Hobart, or at the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park towards Port Arthur, where you can also stop to visit Australia’s most infamous convict settlement at Port Arthur Historic Site.
Day 5 – 7 Hobart to Bicheno, Bicheno
Make an early start today stopping along the way to take in the sights and attractions before arriving into Bicheno. You will pass the seaside village of Swansea, where you could stop for a sweet treat at Kate’s Berry Farm, or stock up on house-made jams or chocolate coated berries. Take a slight detour to Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay lookout for the postcard perfect view across the bay, it will take you 45 minutes to climb and it will be worth every step NB: If you choose to enter the Freycinet National Park, ensure you have a National Parks Pass, which can be purchased at any Rangers Station at the entrance of the park.
A short drive further north will take you to the seaside town of Bicheno. Take a scenic walk to Rocking Rock, the Blowhole to witness saltwater fly up into the air, and along the sandbar to Diamond Island Nature Reserve. At dusk perhaps experience the Bicheno Penguin tour where you will get the rare chance to visit a private rookery and watch the little blue penguins emerge from the sea and head to their homes, a real highlight of the region.
